Charles bridge and old town Prague, Czech Republic
Charles Bridge in Prague is a historically significant bridge from the 14th century, which connects the Old Town with the Lesser Town via the Vltava River. It is one of the oldest preserved stone bridges in Europe and one of the city’s landmarks. The Old Town Square is the central market square in Prague’s Old Town. It extends over more than 9000 m². Romanesque and Gothic foundations can be found in the cellars of the houses surrounding the square. Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo houses stand on the square. The so-called Coronation Path leads from the Old Town Square through the narrow Karlsgasse to the Charles Bridge.
The client, the City of Prague, wanted all the electric lights to be converted back to historical gas lighting.
In cooperation with the Czech company Eltodo, we successfully converted all the historic street lights back to gas lighting. We supplied the gas burner technology and accessories for around 500 historic luminaires. Old components were reconstructed especially for the lights on Charles Bridge so that the lamplighters can light the gas lanterns by hand again. The beautiful candelabras shine in their original gas light from the Old Town across the Coronation Way to Charles Bridge.
